Our ‘Lead the Field’ campaign, calls on growers to join our four Defra-funded projects and help shape the future of UK agriculture.
BOFIN trialists don’t just follow – they lead the field. By taking part in funded, on-farm trials, you play a hands-on role in testing new ideas, influencing research and driving innovation, all while being paid for your contribution.
We need farmer trialists to join our projects exploring soil health, the potential of pulses, sustainable slug control and precision-bred crops.
What’s in it for you?
– You’ll get paid for your involvement – Full support and back-up from the BOFIN team and community – The great feeling of helping lead the field in agricultural innovation!
Whether you’re a farmer or someone who works with and/or supports farmers, we are hosting a free webinar on 16th July at 08:30 for you to learn about BOFIN and its projects. It’s your opportunity to hear from experienced BOFIN trialists and explore how you can get involved. Book your place now and take the first step to lead the field in UK agriculture.
As a Pulse Pioneer in our NCS project, you’ll be paid to carry out on-farm trials and act as a project ambassador. You’ll play a vital role in increasing pulse and legume cropping in arable rotations across the UK and help reduce the need for imported soya in livestock feed.
You’ll need to enter your pulse crops into YEN and complete the required sampling. You’ll also carbon baseline your farm using the Farm Carbon Calculator and collect N-min soil samples. As a project ambassador, we’ll ask you to share your knowledge online, at events, with the press, and within your own farmer networks.
Your involvement will help Lead the Field towards a more sustainable agriculture by helping others see the benefits of growing pulses.
As a Slug Sleuth in the SLIMERS project, you’ll be paid to carry out on-farm trials that help develop new technologies for slug control. You’ll also act as a project ambassador.
In 2025-26, your involvement will include patch-treating against slugs using novel risk-prediction maps to guide your approach. As a project ambassador, we’ll ask you to share your knowledge online, at events, with the press, and within your own farmer networks.
Your involvement will Lead the Field with practical solutions and support other farmers manage slug challenges.
As a Root Ranger in the TRUTH project, you’ll be paid to carry out on-farm trials that help inform SSM practices and evaluate novel genetics and bioproducts. You’ll also take on the important role of project ambassador.
You’ll be asked to collect soil cores, rhizosphere and bare soil samples, and arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) samples. You’ll also plant a strip of a wheat variety identified as having ‘interesting rooting characteristics’ by the John Innes Centre. As a project ambassador, we’ll invite you to share your knowledge online, at events, with the press, and within your own farmer networks.
Your involvement will Lead the Field in understanding of soil and root interactions.
As a PROBITY Pioneer you’ll be paid to carry out on-farm trials and act as a project ambassador.
In 2025-26, you’ll be trialling crop varieties created through TILLING, with the opportunity to move on to lines developed through gene editing in subsequent years.
As a project ambassador, we’ll ask you to share your knowledge online, at events, with the press, and within your own farmer networks.
Your involvement will help the UK industry Lead the Field in cutting-edge breeding techniques.
